We all want long-term results when it comes to weight loss so it is important to consider which approach to dieting or cleansing will help you achieve and maintain your desired weight loss goal. This will help you to create your own recipes too, depending on your preferred flavours.

Vitality 4 Life was founded on the principles of the The Hippocrates Health Institute, which, in a nutshell, encourages an 80% raw food diet, high in living food and cold pressed juices which retain very important enzymes and a maximum amount of nutrients. The gentle nature of the extraction method (originally using the Norwalk juicing press but now made possible with high quality twin and single gear juicers such as the Hippocrates Twin Gear Juicer, Oscar Neo DA 1000 and the Axis Cold Press Juicer) allows our bodies to receive much needed nutrients, particularly when we are trying to lose weight. Vitality 4 Life and the Hippocrates Health Institute also encourage people to find the best source of quality pure water and colonic cleansing.

Go Go Ginger

    • Thumb-size piece of ginger
    • 1 Pear
    • 1/2 Lemon
    • 2 stalks of Kale

Ginger

Ginger is a powerhouse when it comes to weight loss. Ginger increases metabolism, stimulates circulation and excretion of toxins from the body. Ginger helps in expanding the blood vessels which increases your body heat. This makes your body burn more fat quickly. As an added bonus ginger helps lower cholesterol by significantly reducing serum and hepatic cholesterol levels! Pears have a slight laxative affect on the body, meaning they will aid in digestion and help to flush out the body. Kale is packed full of super nutrients and enzymes meaning it gives your body an incredible nutrient kick. A lot of the time our body registers a lack of nutrients as hunger and thus we feel hungry when really it is our body crying out for nutrition. Help your body to suppress "cravings" with this nutrient-packed juice!

Stop the cravings

If a diet is devoid of essential vitamins and minerals, the body demands more and more kilojoules in an attempt to find some sort of nutritional balance. This is an appetite that can never be satisfied. When we use the elimination method (cutting out foods) our body quickly becomes hungry. When we feel hungry, we are not hungry for food but hungry for nutrients.

We can eliminate this malnutrition by eating nutrient-rich foods. Cold pressed juices are a highly concentrated way of delivering nutrients into our bodies. So instead of removing foods and becoming hungry, increase your intake of cold pressed juices so that your body is receiving increased nutrition.

Juice your vegetables and eat your fruit

This is probably the best weight loss tip in terms of juicing we can give you! The Hippocrates Health Institute advise people to juice their vegetables and eat their fruits, particularly if weight loss is the goal. Fruit naturally contains fructose (a type of sugar) so juicing lots of fruit can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels.

However, it is all about experimentation and what works for your body. Fruits also contain enzymes and minerals which are crucial for good health and depending on your body, you may find that some fruits work wonders for you and others which don't. Listen to your body and find the right juice combinations which suit you.

What is the best time of day to juice?

As a general rule - try to have your juice at least half an hour away from meals for better absorption.

A morning juice helps to eliminate food residue from the night, and sometimes the day before. It cleanses the stomach and digestive tract and allows the body to absorb fully the nutrients of foods that follow. The Hippocrates Heath Institute recommends watermelon juice - using the flesh AND the rind. This juice is excellent for the kidneys and bladder and it functions beautifully as a diuretic. By utilising the whole food, the sugar content is reduced and there is additional protein as well as vitamins A, B and C and chlorophyll.

A mid afternoon juice is also very important as the body starts to wind down and begins to tire. This is also the time of day where you may experience cravings for a 'quick fix' - usually snacks and fast foods loaded with hidden fat and sugar. These cravings are a sign of malnutrition. Fresh juice will keep your energy levels up, provide extra nutrients and top up the fluids needed to carry out bodily functions.

The best vegetables to juice for weight loss

Carrots

Carrot_Juice

Juices made with carrot as the basis has the effect of helping to normalize the entire system. This is an important step for someone beginning a weight loss program. From the book 'Natural Weight Control, by Dr Norman Walker explains the amazing properties of correctly prepared carrot juice.

"Intestinal and liver diseases are sometimes due to a lack of certain elements which are found in carrot juice. When these elements are provided by drinking carrot juice a noticeable cleaning up of the liver may take place, and the material which was clogging it up will be found to dissolve."

"In some instances these toxins are released from the liver so abundantly that the intestinal and urinary channels are inadequate to care for this overflow, and in a perfectly natural manner they are passed into the lymph for elimination from the body by means of the pores of the skin."

"This material has a slightly yellow-orange tinge, not unlike a skin tan, and while it is being eliminated from the body, it will discolour the skin." (Walker 1981)

Carrots are a great base for any juice recipe and add a natural sweetness to any juice to help carve those sugar cravings.

Celery

While being very low in calories, celery also has the combination of both sodium and potassium. This makes celery a natural diuretic. Celery works to stimulate urine and help remove excess water and uric acid from the kidneys. This is great for detoxification and to reduce bloating caused by water weight. Celery also contains fibre, which keeps you fuller for longer!

Cucumber

Cucumber is naturally hydrating which is essential during detoxification or weight loss. Drinking adequate amounts of water is one of the best things you can do for your body while trying to lose weight, and cucumber has a 95% water content. Not only will it help to flush out toxins in the body, a properly hydrated person has more energy and vibrancy meaning you will be more inclined to stay active and exercise.

Beetroot

Curve those sugar cravings with a glass of beetroot juice. Beetroots are naturally sweet and beetroot juice is the same! A perfect supplement for soda drinks or high sugar bottled fruit juices.

Beetroot contains an amino acide called leucine. In a study conducted by US magazine 'Nutrition', leucine supplements where given to adult rats. This led to lower body fat percentages, although it did not lead to lower overall body weight. The researchers concluded that while long-term human study was still needed, leucine was possibly helpful in reducing overall body fat percentages.
