We know that green smoothies can be a daunting thought for those who are just starting out. Some of you may have had an unpleasant experience with a chunky "green smoothie" which literally tasted like grass. We are here to prove that a green smoothie can be both super healthy and super delicious. It's great to start out with green smoothies which are a little easier on the taste buds and work your way up to the more hard core super green veggie smoothies. Usually for beginners, simply adding more fruit to a green smoothie will make it sweeter and more palatable. This article is compiled of our top 10 favourite green smoothie recipes so is a mixture of green smoothie recipes for beginners and super green smoothies.

First and foremost, if you are attempting to start making green smoothies, you will need a blender which can handle the fibrous green vegetables. Any avid green smoothie lover will tell you that high powered blenders are essential for making green smoothies. If you don't have one you will quickly find that your average blender will burn out very quickly and the smoothies will be super chunky and un-smoothie like in consistency.

Our favourite ingredients for Green Smoothies...

  • Spinach - spinach will basically appear in any green smoothie recipe and for good reason. It is packed full of dietary potassium, iron and is a great source of protein.
  • Kale - aptly named a "super food" and is packed full of protein, fibre, folate and vitamins A,C and K!
  • Avocado - gives your smoothie a wonderfully creamy texture while also adding protein, fibre and some "good fat"(monounsaturated fats).
  • Mango - will give your smoothie a refreshing sweetness while being high in antioxidants.
  • Banana - make a great base for any smoothie while helping digestion.
  • Coconut Water - a natural isotonic which gives electrolytes and is wonderfully refreshing.
  • Superfoods - chia seeds, flax seeds, chlorophyll, spirulina, bee pollen... The list goes on and all are incredibly good for you.

Our top tips for making the best Green Smoothies...

1. Blend your greens and liquid (water, coconut water, milk) first and then add fruit, superfoods etc. This will ensure that the greens are thoroughly blended before adding everything else. This will ensure that there is no chunky bits and give it a smooth consistency.

2. Freeze some of your fruit - adding frozen fruit to your smoothies makes them thicker and makes them deliciously cold and refreshing. In our experience it also helps to minimize any frothing or foaming in the smoothie. The best fruits to freeze are berries, mangoes and bananas.

3. Sweeten your smoothie with fruit, honey or dried fruit. This is a natural way to sweeten the smoothie without adding any nasty sugars. Dried figs and dates are perfect.
