The Basics on Turmeric

A staple in the Indian diet for thousands of years, this powerful relative of ginger is just beginning to attract some attention in the western world. The bright yellow/orange pigment in turmeric is called curcumin and is a naturally occurring compound which has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. Turmeric is also a key ingredient in most curry dishes and middle eastern cooking with its spicy, pungent and bitter flavour.

Top 3 Health Benefits of Turmeric

1. Powerful Anti-Inflammatory

Studies have shown that curcumin may reduce inflammation in the body and most specifically in relation to the irritation of tissues. Inflammation is linked to health conditions such as allergies, asthma, heart disease, osteoarthritis and cancer, depending on where in the body the inflammation is manifesting. Consuming more turmeric in your diet could potentially reduce your risk of such illnesses or alleviate the symptoms of them.

2. Fights Off Colds & Flus

Curcumin also has powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. It activates a gene within the brain that in turn causes a increased production of bilirubin, a powerful antioxidant. Studies have found that curcumin can also decrease the spread of viral infection within cells meaning that it can potentially reduce the spread of a viral infection.

3. Deters Alzheimer's Disease

The anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties of turmeric are potentially powerful enough to deteriorate the "amyloid plaques" in the brain that result to Alzheimer's Disease by helping the blood vessels to deliver oxygen to the brain more effectively.
