'Beet for Beat' for Heart Week

Beetroot Juice - good for the heart and your health

Thanks to Heart Week we are becoming more aware of our hearts and what we can do to protect them. I am not sure if beetroot juice will protect your heart from being broken, however, this delicious, luscious red vegetable can play an important role in keeping your heart healthy.

A natural way to lower blood pressure

Studies have shown that "that a daily glass of beetroot juice can lower blood pressure in people with hypertension - even those whose high blood pressure was not controlled by drug treatment." Dr. Shannon Amoils, British Heart Foundation, senior research advisor

Beetroot contains high levels of dietary nitrate (NO3), which the body converts into biologically active nitrite (NO2) and nitric oxide (NO). These nitrates relax and dilate blood vessels, thereby having a blood pressure lowering effect on the human body.

Boost your activity with beetroot juice

Keeping active is one of the Heart Foundation's key elements in keeping a healthy heart. Even walking up to 30 minutes a day can be helpful. If you can't get outside as much as you would like a walking treadmill can help you keep your steps up... add a glass of beetroot juice and studies show you can exercise longer.

  6. Do I really need a juicer and a blender?

Do I really need a juicer and a blender?

In a nutshell YES it is a perfect kitchen pair to have a juicer and a blender. People are becoming more and more discerning about what they eat and how they can get the best nutrient filled drink or meal for their healthy body buck. The high powered BioChef blenders and cold press BioChef juicers offer different ways for the body to ingest healthy nutrients, enzymes and just plain deliciousness. Put simply the blender will retain the fibre and the juicer will give you a quicker nutrient blast that can be absorbed more easily. Both a juicer and a blender are important for different reasons but together they are unstoppable.

What does a cold press Oscar or BioChef juicer do?

Cold pressed juicers are masticating cold pressed juice extractors that also double as a living food kitchen appliance. The horizontal style auger design crushes almost any type of vegetables and fruits including leafy greens (kale, wheatgrass, herbs, aloe). The crushing and squeezing action mimics our own chewing action by correctly breaking open the cell wall, releasing the nutrients and organic water content while expelling the insoluble fibre.

Without all this indigestible fibre, your body doesn't have to work as hard to break down the vegetables and fruits. Cold pressed vegetable juices deliver nutrients into our bloodstream quickly and in a bio-available form. Juices are included in almost all types of healing and detoxification programs. The cold press juicer is named so

  7. Celery Juice Craze - Fad or Foe?

Celery Juice Craze - Fad or Foe?

Instagram is turning green for the latest superfood - celery juice.

Anthony William the Medical Medium is the man behind the celery juice craze. He claims that we should drink 16oz (500ml) of plain celery juice every morning to radically transform our health and digestion and all in a single week!  Anthony is not a doctor, a nutritionist or a researcher. What he does do is converse with the 'spirit of compassion' for information on how to cure diseases. In particular those that baffle the medical profession. Each to their own of course but does it work?

I can barely stand eating celery so I can’t think of anything worse than to drink celery juice first thing in the morning. However, even if it tastes bad should we listen to the crowd? Juice it up, pinch our noses and just swallow. Or do we stick with the morning cuppa of our choice.

    Celery.. upping the anti

Like other ‘superfoods’ out there celery is said to be a powerful healing food. Celery juice is upping the anti when it comes to disease fighting anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory abilities. We need these little superheroes to protect ourselves from many chronic illnesses including cancer and auto-immune disea

  8. New Year's Resolutions - Just say NO

New Year's Resolutions - Just say NO

People have been failing at their New Year's Resolutions for 4000 years. What makes me think I could do any better? It's been three days and I have already failed. At least back then the Babylonians were offering their resolutions up to God in the hope of improving the crop. Now we just offer them up to ourselves, or our nearest and dearest, who have no choice but to listen and nod along. But what do we get in return?

new years resolutions, eat healthy, juice everday

When looking at the top new year's resolutions I mostly notice this.. we have to give up, quit, try harder, be better, look better and on it goes. I think if we were going to do these things we would have already done them. Its just too hard especially with a hangover. I don't know about you but if someone, or even myself, tells me to do something I just don't want to do it. It's the latent toddler in all of us. So by the time we get to the second week, or day in my case, of January we think 'bugger it' and go back to normal really wishing we hadn't told anyone. What we are left with is a little bit of guilt and a lot of self loathing. Perfect start to the New Year.

I like the old saying 'one day at a time' it's perfect for this time of year and any other. Instead of saying I must lose 10 kg this year then I will feel better about myself. Maybe just one day start the day with a cleansing juice and go for a walk
